Dirt, Gravel, and Low-Volume Roads Program

Spotlight on Pipe Inlets and Outlets

Maple Run Road - Woodbury Township - 2011-2015 Dirt and Gravel Road Projects

Maple Run Road (T605) is a local township road in eastern Woodbury Township that intersects with Pulpit Road (T636) about 1.5 miles west of Hickory Bottom Road on the west side of Woodbury Borough. Proceeding to the east, Maple Run Road climbs a gap in the Tussey Mountain Ridge south of Pulpit Hill, eventually turning to a southeasterly course in a high valley bordered by Warrior Ridge to the east , Tussey Mountain to the west and Coot Hill on the south. The road crosses Maple Run and its tributary, Bear Run, both wild trout streams, before entering Liberty Township where T605 becomes Ravers Gap Road.

As Pulpit Road and Maple Run Road climb from the valley, each parallels first one and then another unnamed tributary to Hickory Bottom Creek. As Maple Run Road reaches the crest of the saddle between Pulpit Hill and the point of Tussey Mountain, it turns to the southeast and skirts around the steep face of Tussey. Here, Maple Run Road has no impact on any waterbodies and this section is not an approved program worksite. As the road descends, it enters the catchment for Maple Run and again becomes an approved worksite until the border with Liberty Township.

In early 2011, Woodbury Township applied for technical and financial assistance to make improvements to Maple Run Road. Drainage issues and road surface were the main problems so road fill and cross-pipes were featured in the work that took place over several years and construction phases, primarily due to the funding that was available to BCCD prior to 2014 when significant increases to the statewide program were realized. The native-rock work at the inlets and outlets for the new and refurbished cross-pipes on this project is outstanding; both functional and beautiful. This hand-work was performed by township staff. It is exceptional and is the reason this project is featured here. The slide carousel below contains photos illustrating four of the cross-pipe structures, one inlet (headwall) and three outlets (endwalls), with 3 - 5 images with dates for each.
