Floodplain Program Ordinance Information for Municipalities

Ordinances

Communities that participate in the National Floodplain Insurance Program must adopt municipal ordinances that satisfy certain minimal requirements to manage flooding risks and minimize damage.

Floodplain Management Ordinance - STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES AND GUIDANCE

When no Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA's) have been identified, no water surface elevation data has been provided, and floodways and coastal high hazard areas have not been identified, and the community wants to apply for participation in the NFIP, the municipal ordinance must meet the minimum requirements of Level A.

Suggested provisions for Level A communities

For communities with identified SFHA's through a published Flood Hazaed Boundary Map (FHBM) or Flood Insurance rate Map (FIRM), but water surface elevation data have not been provided or a floodway or coastal high hazard area has not been identified, then a Level B ordinance is required.

Suggested provisions for Level B communities

When final flood elevations are provided but no floodways or coastal high hazard ares have been identified, then a community must have an approved Level C ordinance.

Suggested provisions for Level C communities
